As a consultant, coached & mentored the senior executive responsible for product and design.

Collaborated on a new kind of for-profit, ‘tech for good’ incubator. Found the space, led the design, and oversaw construction & furnishing to rave reviews.

Held a variety of Group Program Manager, Product Unit Manager, and senior individual contributor positions. Highlights include:● Led cross-functional engineering teams as large as 155 people on several major releases of Visual Studio and Windows.● Founded and led the cross-company virtual team that diagnosed the organizational and cultural problems with Vista-era Windows. Presented a comprehensive set of recommendations for how to fix the Windows engineering organization to Steve Ballmer.● Advised a key engineering Vice President (Amitabh Srivastava) on a broad array of a strategic, organizational, and technical issues.● Co-wrote the whitepaper and co-founded the project that led to Microsoft’s cloud OS service (Windows Azure).● Helped bootstrap a successful innovation team (Office Labs). Drove development of the overall processes & procedures for the innovation system and led a highly successful innovation effort (TownSquare).● Researched & synthesized a coherent framework that for the first time succinctly explained why Microsoft has program managers, what the role is, and why other companies tend not to. Presented the framework to the company-wide Program Management Leadership Team, as part of deciding the future of program management. Also used the research to develop a new-from-scratch Introduction to Program Management class for all new program managers. I left for a year and a half in September of 2008 to teach high school math.

Co-founded and led a VC-funded software company that built mass market diagramming tools. Our “smart line" layout & routing technology was acquired by Visio (and later Microsoft).

Managed the development of SMS' corporate data model and involvement in healthcare industry data exchange standards (HL7), an XML-like approach to system interoperability.

Led the design and development of the Bachman/DBA for DB2, a graphics intensive, knowledge-based CASE workbench written in LISP. The highly regarded product sold roughly $100 million in five years.

Designed and implemented expert systems for business and industry risk analysis and qualitative explanation of financial statements using LISP.

Designed, developed, and rolled out several major systems using SAS to measure satellite communications system performance. Efforts significantly improved service quality.

Spec’d a large COBOL payroll and personnel system conversion for the Department of Commerce (DOC). All seventeen DOC agencies migrated smoothly and on schedule.
