About Alessia Del Vecchio

I like when technology is useful and helps making a positive change. I have been working in pre-sales for the last 5 years and I had the pleasure to solve some complex technical customer challenges. I soon discovered that what I liked of pre-sales is seeing people succeed as I truly believe that people working together can achieve far better results than one person on their own. This led me to take on a pre-sales team manager role. Joining GitLab means you’ll contribute to the most comprehensive DevSecOps platform, empowering development, security, and ops teams to build better software, faster. As one of the largest all-remote companies in the world with globally distributed team members, this is a place where you can contribute from almost anywhere. You’ll be part of an ambitious, productive team that embraces a set of shared values in everything we do. As part of GitLab’s Solutions Architecture team, my role is to enable curious Solutions Architects to drive customers impact while keeping a foot deep in the automation and DevSecOps tech.

I love seeing people grow and succeed and I like to be part of that. I strongly believe that a team of people can achieve more than an individual if everyone is inspired by the mission. I am in charge of a team of 9 bright Solutions Engineers located remotely across different parts of Europe. As a team of pre-sales engineers, we have a quarterly target, so the team is organised on a set of accounts basis focusing on the delivery of this target. I coach my team throughout onboarding and plan for their development and personal growth. We review this periodically.I enjoy motivating people and help them discover their talents: I love the energy of achieving a milestone after long lasting and planned hard work. I surely emphasise this aspect during the interviews for new hires. I seek for feedback for myself and I am always willing to receive any whether these are solicited or not as long as they are actionable. I foster a feedback culture in my team too during the weekly 1-2-1s, via retrospective on specific activities as a team or by individuals requests to other team members. Also, believing that a team can achieve greater things than individual means not just your direct team, but also your peers. I organise recurrent catch up with my peers in Sales, R&D, CSM, Labs and across other regions. Cross collaboration is fundamental for our customers success.

What I like of being a pre-sales engineer is that you are really capable of influencing certain organisations. By coaching them on how to modernise their processes, the impact on their way of operating software in production is tangible.I worked mainly with Telecommunications Operators and this is land of extreme tech knowledge but of software development and operations outsourcing. Most of my customer interactions required thorough qualification where I ask lots of questions before I am able to come up with a solution. Although I strongly believe that technology and its automation is the key to get any organisation succeed, I think that majority of times customers looked at tech as the only way to solve their problems. Hence why I always ask my customers what outcomes they want to achieve and how this aligns with business strategy before we talk of any technical solution.Outcome driven solutions are by far more useful than just simple tech shows. I enjoyed this role because it allowed me to:1. Qualify technical challenges to solve customer needs2. Run outcomes driven PoV3. Discover customer Path Production and Day 2 Operations4. Quantify with measurable OKRs how the solution can fulfil the customer needs5. Present a vision of how software should be built and operated6. Influence the product roadmapFundamental for this journey were:>> The Tanzu portfolio that extends the great capabilities of Kubernetes opensource to optimise Operators efficiency and boost Developer Productivity.>>The Tanzu Labs with tools like SWIFT, Event Storming, Notional Architecture, Software Design Patterns to really coach customers on how to modernise and build software in a sustainable manner forever.>> The use of well known pre-sales practices such as SPIN selling, Value Stream Mapping, Business Outcome Assessment.>> Great people I have been the pleasure to work with.
  • Vmware Tanzu
    Senior Platform Architect
    Vmware Tanzu Mar 2020 - Nov 2020
    London, England, United Kingdom
I joined VMware through the Pivotal Software acquisition. As Covid started while the acquisition completed, I faced the reality of working from home in a much bigger organisation than Pivotal. So, head down to learn all the VMware Portfolio and ways of working. I had the honour to work for VMware Global accounts, i.e.: big F500 customers world wide with a primary presence in EMEA and that have invested a lot in VMware technology. This allowed me to strengthening skills in these areas: 1. Qualify technical challenges to solve customer needs2. Run outcomes driven PoV3. Discover customer Path Production and Day 2 Operations4. Quantify with measurable OKRs how the solution can fulfil the customer needs5. Present a vision of how software should be built and operatedCompared to Pivotal, I have had the pleasure to work with colleagues with a completely different expertise set than mine. In a startup environment, you end up doing a lot more than what your role is meant to be, so when I joined VMware I had the chance to focus on:>> The broader VMware portfolio including vSphere, ESXi, vSAN as well as Tanzu portfolio that was being built as the acquisition completed.>>The Tanzu Labs with tools like SWIFT, Event Storming, Notional Architecture, Software Design Patterns to really coach customers on how to modernise and build software in a sustainable manner forever.>> The use of well known pre-sales practices such as Value Stream Mapping>> Great people I have been the pleasure to work with.

Pivotal has been that life changer workplace: everyone super smart and working so effectively. I made these three Pivotal principles as my work ethic:>> Do the right thing>> Do what works>> Be KindThis was my first time with pre-sales and I have learnt so many new skills, such as:1. Presented Pivotal vision, strategy and product roadmaps to executives and technical management2. Worked with sales team to develop and implement account penetration strategies and drive the adoption of Pivotal solutions within strategic accounts. 3. Qualified sales opportunities in the terms of customer technical requirements, competition, decision making process and funding.4. Used knowledge of competitive solutions to propose the most optimal solution for the customer5. Presented the design and value of proposed Pivotal solution and business case to customers and prospects.6. Built relationships with the account team, partners and customers in support of sales team objectives7. Configured and documented Pivotal software, hardware and service solutions to meet customer and sales objectives while delivering in RFx and POCs.8. Worked together with Product Management, Technical Marketing and Engineering during the development, launch and continuing refinement of Pivotal productsTechnologies, standards and tools I have worked with: Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Pivotal Application Service, Pivotal Container Service, Pivotal Function Service, Pivotal Marketplace, BOSH, Kubernetes, NSX-T, vSphere, Flannel, Concourse, CredHub, SpringBoot.
