The research project provides for the extraction and characterization of macromolecules (proteins, fats, chitin component and minerals) from the black soldier fly "Hermetia illucens" fed with food waste products. The purpose of the project was to recycle these macromolecules in food supplements for animals and at the same time promote the disposal of waste. During the internship, in addition to the most common laboratory techniques, I performed GC / MS analysis for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of fatty acids, chitin, sterols, phenols and chiral amino acids. I also performed HPLC / FLD analysis for the identification of total amino acids. I have developed a new method/protocol for extraction and, subsequently, derivatization of the chitin component through GC / MS analysis. Show less

Molecular analysis in yeast on the YLL033w gene. The purpose of the research project was to find , at first, the location and then the function of the protein encoded by the gene YLL033w. The gene was first functionalized with the hemagglutinin epitope and then cloned in yeast cells. From literature the protein encoded by the gene was predicted mitochondrial so our study was to extract the mitochondria and verify it through the immunofluorescence technique.
