This role incorporated scale testing, architecture validation, and the scaling out of custom SaaS solutions - all integral to the integrity of our public cloud environments. Ultimately, I got promoted into the Engineering Manager position as the larger org grew from ~50 people to more than 500.

Looking for a challenge, I decided to work with the team at TransCirrus, founded by former colleagues from Netapp. TransCirrus was a startup company looking to break into the on-premise cloud business. I developed and deployed infrastructure to dev, test, build, package, release, and deploy code, wrote features in python, wrote tools to test code and tests for code, wrote documentation, and trained team members. Company received 1 million in funding.

At Logos Technologies, I had the opportunity to work with engineers and scientists from many different fields on skunkwork projects from DARPA, including a paraglider with night time payload deliveries, stealth Marine dirt bikes, and FPGA programs. My job was to collaborate and enable their engineering and scientific needs, including DR, compliance, Linux, VmWare infrastructure, Openstack, Ceph, SAN, CICD systems, etc.

Led team of ~12 engineers to virtualize data center resources across the company, reducing physical space utilization until the new data center came online. Work with 50+ engineering teams, 5 data centers, 25,000+ servers, and 10,000+ VMs. Worked closely with engineering leaders. Re-architected environments as needed.

I assessed the niche market for automated software to buy and sell textbooks. After some deep analysis of public data, I took us through the exercise of assessing margins, feasibility, and running some manual tests. I decided to move forward with the idea, ultimately leading to a net positive business. I was responsible for hiring developers, the business model, creating the marketing material, defining features, reaching milestones, fixing bugs, managing upgrades, managing P&L, etc.

I have always had a deep interest in the intersection of business and technology. I started this company with some partners to invest in various publicly traded companies with a focus on technology. I was able to learn and push myself here in new ways with a deep level of accountability. I had responsibilities for research, modeling, communicating, and reporting on operations and activities.

I started as an intern around 2003 and transitioned to fulltime by mid-2006. Netapp was growing as much as 100% per year in our group (Engineering Support). I was quickly vaulted into a senior position and was able to lead, train, and mentor new folks. I had day to day responsibilities for break-fix. In addition, I worked on project to relocate two datacenters, and, later, on grid computing and storage environment for engineers, which was essentially an internal project representing an early version of modern cloud computing.
