About Alex Barker
My career and academic interests are within social entrepreneurship, coaching, leadership and Mental health within business. In my time at UWE I co-founded a student mental health business called P.A.V.E education. Over two years we have: Created a podcast called real people, honest talks that has been listened to over 5000 times in over 20+ countries. Created a primary school workbook and journal which are being distributed across the UK. Started the process of creating a student university mental health app that is being distributed to University.Also at my time at university:I have also been trained as a team coach within team academys at universities.Lead a team of 16 team entrepreneurs through a pandemic and tracked their academic achievement ensuring they meet their aspirations. Made the dean's list for academic excellence in my second year of university. Started multiple coaching/team coaching roles, within UWE and partner universities. I am always looking for any opportunities within my career and academic interests of social entrepreneurship, coaching, leadership and Mental health within business, so always feel free to get in touch with me and connect.

Peer To Peer Coaching (Student Initiative)
Peer To Peer Coaching (Student Initiative)
Offering 4 sessions of 1 to 1, peer to peer coaching for Team Entrepreneur students per week. The main aim is to Support level 1 and 2 students while creating a more inclusive environment within our course. This role will allow me to gain experience coaching in a 1 to 1 setting while using first-hand the coaching models I have learnt from my other experiences.
Assistant Team Coach - Creative Spark Programme
Employed by UWE to Coach a team of women training within tech at Ilia State University in Georgia. In line with the sustainability strategy of the creative spark program, the UWE Bristol, UK and ISU, Tbilisi, Georgia partnerships offer the Women tech Hub initiative. The aim of the whole programme is to train 60 female students in tech entrepreneurship and then match those students with start-ups, founded by women who mostly will be ex-inmate and conditionally convicted.

P.A.V.E. was created when two people (including myself) decided that they wanted to tackle the mental health problems that we see within the world, with our focus being on students from when they first enter the school system in KS1 until they graduate university. One of the best parts about our business is all profits are reinvested back into the business meaning we can support students even more. In our first few months we created a podcast called Real People, Honest Talks that aimed to break the social stigma around the conversations on mental health. Within 6 months we had built a team of passionate entrepreneurs ready to advance the business. As a team we created a mental health and wellbeing activity/story book for KS1 Children. We are got these workbooks into schools and received valuable feedback to prove that our books will have a the positive impact we assumed they would. We also started partnering with primary schools in the summer of 2021 and creating mental health and wellbeing resources for their students at their request.Alongside our other business activities we were in the process of creating a mental health and wellbeing app called My Self-Help for university student. We aimed for students to be the main voice and creators of resources within the platform as currently students lack involvement regarding mental health and wellbeing within universities. To execute the student element we aimed to build communities within universities to support the platform and create resources to be uploaded to the platform, that wont be just shared with their fellow students at their organisations but every university that is apart of the platform family. The vision of getting students at every university in the united Kingdom working together, with the platform at the heart, motivated every one of our team members to pave the way to better mental health.In 2023 the business was passed to the society Enactus at UWE so I could focus on my education.

In my role as a assistant coach I supported the Head Coach of a year 1 team company made up of 20 students within the university degree Team Entrepreneurship. I would attend monthly meetings with my supervisor to learn more coaching/ team coaching techniques and models. I would also attend monthly meetings with the Team Coach to reflect on our practice and what was happening within the team currently. Within this role I was able to have a positive effect for the teams development while getting experience of being a team coach.
