Reliability/Maintenance EngineeringHexcel Corporation Jan 2017 - Apr 2018Greater Salt Lake City AreaOn a daily basis I conduct projects incorporating root cause analysis of malfunctioning process equipment. I also manage on average 20 capital projects for the maintenance group. A majority of the capital projects are geared toward process equipment improvement. Additional daily functions consist of directing millwrights and electricians toward the immediate repair of failed process equipment. Currently managing a project consisting of the design and install of a 20K sqft warehouse. Install consists of a mezzanine, pallet racking and an office. Along with the physical install, I am tasked with the consolidation and move of all plant inventory to this new location. In addition, a new inventory management system is also being designed which will be integrated into the daily function of our millwrights and electricians. I was recently involved in the upgrade and rebuild of a high temperature furnace. The project work expanded over a four day period. Project details consisted of diagnosing an increase in amperage within a particular zone of the furnace. The increase in amperage was the fault of the carbon element rods which had prematurely deteriorated and failed due to an incorrect choice in element type from a rebuild that took place in the past. Once the issue was found, insulation, brick and carbon plates which make up the general structure of the furnace were replaced along with new properly designed carbon heating elements. Before the re-heat process all other areas of the furnace were inspected, along with all preventative maintenance items were completed. During the re-heat of the furnace, water pressure (which cools the furnace), N2 pressure, CO, and dew points were all monitored and tested per Hexcel's procedure. Result - New element rods were replaced throughout the furnace with an expected life of 8+ years. Furnace is currently working without issues. -
Carbon Fiber QualityHexcel Corporation May 2016 - Jan 2017Greater Salt Lake City AreaWithin the fibers quality group, I was tasked with helping reduce variability within a fiber specimen testing lab. I did this by way of machine design and process modification, focused on lowering variability within lab measurement systems. During my time with this team we were able to achieve a 65% reduction in product property variability through machine design and process modification.A personal significant project, was the design and fabrication of a tabbing melter. An extensive SolidWorks 3D model design, with accompanied drawings resulted in the fabrication of a more efficient melter. Its greater efficiencies were seen in the heating control around a specific set point. This in turn lowered variability within the fiber tensile testing process. Principles of thermodynamics, electrical control theory, financial forecasting and extensive communication with the fabricator and other contractors allowed for a successful project. The new tabbing melter is currently in use and the lab team has entirely converted over to it, having outdated the previous unit it replaced. Lessons learned have been documented upon commissioning of equipment. Recently, the tabber has been in fact reviewed and replicated for an additional unit of its kind.In addition, with the help of a local contractor I was able to design a new resin pump system within the lab. Design of a piping flow diagram utilizing four different chemicals, the sizing of pumps and implementation of chemical MSDS's for proper piping/pump material design were just a few of the activities that were had during this project.Feedback from lab techs suggest that the resin recipe made from this system has a lower variability in the mass fractions of the various ingredients which was the intended goal of the project. -
Advanced Manufacturing Capital ProjectsHexcel Corporation Jul 2014 - May 2016Greater Salt Lake City AreaResponsibilities:Simultaneously managed and co-managed projects ranging from $20K to over $1M. Aligned financial forecasting with project progression, and succeeded in meeting project completion deadlines. Conducted weekly contractor safety meetings and enforced Hexcel’s/OSHA’s safety standards with contractors and vendors on site. Regularly presented data analysis in meetings in collaboration with fellow engineers. Significant Projects:Exhaust Stack Height Extensions - Purpose was to meet EPA standards for continued expansion of facility. A total of 60 existing stacks had to be increased in height before a new set of fiber lines where to be completed. Stack height changes ranged from 20' - 80'.Result: Project was designed and implemented, and was successful without safety, timing, and financial issues. Compressed Air Project - Design and implement an additional system to solve inconsistent pressures that were negatively affecting manufacturing processes within certain buildings. Result: It was determined that an additional compressor and system components would be needed and would need to be integrated into the existing compressed air systems as a supply and backup to support current and future compressed air needs. Fiber Line Electric Motor Analysis - Research additional options for malfunctioning electric motors with an option that will increase longevity. Result: Electric motors from various manufacturers were chosen, and based off of analysis of bearing temperatures and other factors, a new brand of electric motors were chosen. To date, the new brand has performed without fail. Ergonomic Package Handling - Implement a system that will allow operators to lift heavy packaged products within the packaging area. Result: Collaborate with exterior engineers in the design and build process of two independent crane systems in two different buildings. Systems included overhead cranes, and custom made vacuum suction lifters.
