The Bush Chicken is a multiple award winning Liberian news outlet. The name is inspired by both the comprehensive coverage of rural communities and the idea that the outlet will serve as a wake-up call to critical issues.In 2014, we identified the following problems with journalism in Liberia:• Articles are often poorly researched.• Articles reflect a poor command of the English language.• News businesses are poorly managed, leading to paltry revenues and subsequently, poorly paid reporters. This, in turn, leads to news bias towards those who are willing to pay.• The interior and rural areas are widely ignored• A general lack of in-depth analysis or investigative reportingTo solve these issues, the Bush Chicken will produce adequately researched and well-written news articles. We will pay our journalists well to ensure that they can focus on writing with minimal conflicts of interests. We will also employ investigative journalism and ensure that stories from the interior are covered.As the Editor in Chief, my job is to: • Train journalists in development workshops as their Lead Instructor• Guide editors and local reporters on the best practices of online writing• Work diligently with local reporters to develop and write new stories • Manage an ongoing editorial process while reviewing, editing and fine tuning content• Provide advice on editorial issues • Ensure quality by making sure that reporters deliver accurate, fair and unbiased stories• Generating ideas for new ways of doing things, such as using new technology, implementing ways to increase readership and how to utilize new media
