About Alex Clark

Alex Clark received an MSc Degree in Physics from the University of Bristol in 2005 and in 2011 received his PhD degree in quantum photonics from the Centre for Quantum Photonics, also at the University of Bristol, UK.He was engaged in many projects in the Centre for Quantum Photonics through his years there, most notably his work with photonic crystal fibres to generate photons in a variety of quantum states, the demonstration of a quantum controlled-NOT gate in optical fibre and the creation of multi-qubit cluster states using fibre devices. He has had successful collaborations with a number of other institutions including the University of Bath, Imperial College London and the University of Nice. He joined the Centre for Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) group at the University of Sydney in 2011 where he was Project Leader of the Quantum Integrated Photonics Project. In 2015 he won a Marie Sklodwoska Curie fellowship to move to Imperial College London, working on building photon sources with single organic molecules. He then received a Royal Society University Research Fellowship which he held at Imperial College, running a team of researchers in the Centre for Cold Matter working on quantum science and technology with cold molecules. In 2021 he moved back to the University of Bristol as a Senior Lecturer in Quantum Communication Technologies, and in 2024 was appointed as Interim Co-Director of the Quantum Engineering Technology Labs. His research has been published in a number of journals and he has presented his work at many international conferences on a variety of subjects. Alex is a member of the Institute of Physics, SPIE and Optica.Dr. Clark was awarded a Worldwide Universities Network Researcher Mobility Award in 2011, an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) in 2013, a Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellowship in 2015, and a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2017. He has been awarded over £10M in the last five years to pursue research in quantum optics and photonics.

  • Qet Labs
    Interim Co-Director
Qet Labs Oct 2024 - Present
The Quantum Engineering Technology Labs, QET Labs for short, is a world leading research centre at the University of Bristol. It consists of 12 permanent academic staff and their teams, amounting to a team of over 120 people. QET Labs research spans many areas of quantum science and technology including integrated quantum photonics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum transduction and frequency conversion, quantum imaging and sensing, quantum communication, and quantum computing and simulation. We are an integral part of three current UK Quantum Technology Hubs and also home to two Centres for Doctoral Training, one in Quantum Engineering (2014-2023 intake) and one in Quantum Information Science and Technologies (2024-2028 intake). In my role I take a lead on strategy, general weekly activities, group and management meetings, and liaising with the wider university and UK quantum science communities.
