Research And Development, Technology Intern
- Determined how various Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) particle sizes impacted the flow ability, kinetics, and quality of the SABIC PBT product, as well as BDO, THF, and Water residual effects.- Formulated a chemical contaminants mass balance for the SABIC Chlor-Alkali plant to quantify the locations of contaminant build-up within the plant, in order to reduce the environmental impact of brine purge waste into the Ohio River.- Presented findings on my particle size experiments in a SABIC Mount Vernon research symposium.- Awarded 1st prize for the SABIC Summer Internship Safety Observations.
Manufacturing Engineering Intern
Research and Development Engineering Project:- Planned, developed, organized and ran tests on a hydrophobic polymer coating and coating machine for the product, Bondek Plus in order to minimize costs and maximize efficiency. - Coordinated and communicated with manager level staff in Quality, Manufacturing, and Production departments.- Supervised and performed extensive time and process study, resulting in implementation of adjustments, replacements, and part installations on the existing coating machine. Changes yielded a 65% reduction of coating cost and waste. - Used CAD programming to design a new concept for what I termed a “Continuous Microfluidic Coating Machine” to eliminate all coating waste, and speed up production time 10 fold. - Presented my findings to the Teleflex Coventry Facility at the end of my 8 week internship. Manufacturing Engineering Responsibilities:- Conducted product procedure assessments utilizing documentation tools, navigation skills and single audited programs; and documented procedural modifications based on my recommendations.- Gained expertise with document control systems including MiniTab, Microsoft, SAP, and Agile.Worked with quality systems such as process verifications, validation protocols and non-conformance documents
Research Assistant
- Analyzed platinum catalyst removal experiments using various synthesized copolymers with Professor Matthew Yates, who worked with an Army research lab to test various methods for detecting explosives. - Synthesized copolymers that would eventually help to detect nitro compounds commonly found in explosives, via polymerization with Polydimethylsiloxane and vinyl groups such as Eugenol in a hydrosilylation reaction.
