The PhD Professional Development Program (PDP) at BASF is a career development program for young and talented PhDs, involving three 8-month assignments. Each assignment is chosen based on personal interest and business needs, and is intended to broaden our understanding of new regions, sites, chemical products and processes, and job functions.My first rotation was at the global catalysts headquarters in Iselin, NJ. I developed kinetic models for mobile emissions catalyst research and development, and heavy-duty diesel customers. I also created an optimization tool to expedite model development (in agreement with experimental data and increased predictive power) and exhaust gas treatment system design.My second rotation was at the Wyandotte, MI site near Detroit. There, I was part of a team tasked with identifying new market opportunities in e-mobility (transportation electrification). This involved technology scouting, market analysis, networking with internal and external experts, developing prototype materials, protecting intellectual property, and transferring developed processes to an appropriate business unit for scale-up.My final rotation was at the Tarrytown, NY site near NYC. There, I was a member of the Modeling and Formulation Research team. My work involved optimization for research and development groups around North America by developing nonlinear dynamic models (e.g. process modeling, partial differential equations, model-based design of experiments, and optimal control).
