I was part of a research team studying the erosion of a sand dune in coastal Saugatuck, MI. I modeled the wind flow over dune structures using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Multiple turbulence models were used to simulate the wind profile. Using the CFD, the shear stress on the surface of the dune was modeled, thereby predicting where sand erosion would occur. The simulations were compared to data collected on the dune in Saugatuck.
