At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva physicists are colliding protons at high energy to understand the model that describes the elementary particles and the forces the govern them. Out of the fragments of these collisions, that produce new particles, we tried to deduce which particles where produced. The heaviest of the six quarks, the top-quark, is a special particle in this model. By measuring with the ATLAS detector how often the top-quark was produced by collisions at an energy of 7 TeV, we showed how well we understand the detector, how well the model describes reality and whether new physics models have played a part in the process. Since the measurement has been performed with only the first five months of data at this energy it is quite an achievement that the top-quark has indeed been found. Theoretical prediction and the measured value are in good agreement. The work resulted in a PhD thesis titled: "Searching for the Top". The thesis was defended successfully on July the 7th 2011.
