Design for Manufacturing (DFM) experience through design process of an entirely new external hard drive product. I designed an enclosure in Solidworks based on a provided Industrial Design document from the ground up, with the goal being to design an enclosure around an inherent improvement in thermal performance. Each part of the enclosure was designed specifically for a particular manufacturing process--injection molding, die casting, metal extrusion, compression molding, CNC--and was put through a DFM and cost analysis. Calculation and estimation of thermal resistances from hard drive surface to external surface of enclosure. Calculation and estimation of passive convection coefficients for various Seagate external hard drive products.Examination and analysis of effects of changing hard drive enclosure parameters on the product's thermal power dissipation capabilities.
