Hi, my name is Alexander Kovar, and I am a Senior studying Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University.Skills are built with practice, but failures highlight changes we can make in all aspects of life. I practice consistent and active listening to avoid failure and create new understanding. I treat life like music. I listen, learn, and improvise. In college, I had three enormous opportunities:During my first year, I joined the Iowa State Solar Car team, where I learned so much applicable engineering knowledge that I would not have learned or done in the classroom. I had incredible experiences when I went to solar car races and during large projects with demanding deadlines to make creativity flourish. During my Sophomore year, I got to work at Ames lab in the Critical Materials Institute. There, I learned how to do high-impact research that challenged the United States' dependency on rare earth materials by moving to more accessible materials. I was also noted as the second author of a research paper where I collected data from Soft magnetic materials I created. In the summer of 2024, I was allowed to work for Superior Tube Products as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern. There, I learned about lean manufacturing and how to collect cycle times on operations at different work centers effectively. I compiled these into master lists for all part numbers in the plant. I made standard work layouts for the most effective way for an operator to complete a part. This makes it easier for a new operator to learn how they should complete their labor. After these were finished, I estimated all of the burdens in the company to figure out the difference we made for Superior Tube Products and it totaled out to 132,000 dollars.I enjoy playing stringed instruments, Ultimate Frisbee or basketball, writing, art, and traveling to unique places in my free time.
