In my third and final rotation at Highwoods, I spent a large portion of my time performing self guided building audits in an effort to curb excess usage at poor performing buildings. This involved identifying buildings with high base loads, communicating with the property managers to determine if this usage is necessary/billed, and then performing data analysis and digging through various controls systems (ALC, Alerton, Trane) to determine what/when/where was causing the problem. This effort, in addition to energy savings from lighting retrofits, resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings. Additionally, I once again served as a Project Manager for indoor lighting retrofits at one of our Raleigh office parks in addition to helping manage multiple other outdoor projects on a tight time schedule.

In my second rotation at Highwoods, I continued with the usual work I performed in rotation one while adding some additional tasks to develop new skills. Primarily, I served as a Project Manager for outdoor lighting retrofits at one of our Raleigh office parks. This involved developing a thorough cost analysis to be approved by management, and then handling many of the details involved in coordinating the retrofit. I also conducted solo controls audits of seemingly poor performing buildings to determine if building were performing at optimal levels. This allowed me to gain a lot of insight into controls theory, as well as furthering my knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics.

My first Co-op rotation in the Asset Management department of Highwoods consisted of learning the ropes of some of the important day to day technologies we use (energy monitoring systems, controls systems, and reporting techniques) and creating some updates/improvements with JMP and Excel. Major projects included creating an accurate savings and forecasting reporting tool utilizing Excel, JMP, and Access. Additionally I created a series of spreadsheets analyzing potential savings and payback for indoor lighting retrofits, which allowed a large number of projects to get kicked off. On a more regular basis I monitored company portfolio energy usage and relayed information and improvement suggestions to technicians, property managers, and tenants to ensure efficiency. By learning ideal energy usage strategies I have gained significant hands on experience applying thermodynamics and heat transfer.

As a mechanical engineering intern with Plexus, I aided the team in designing parts aimed to create a better user experience. I developed my skills mainly with SolidWorks as well as machining and printing parts, and injection molding. This provided useful hands on experience and education with design in general, specifically in the medical realm. Additionally, I acquired valuable experience in industrial design and customer relations.
