About Alexander Cooley
Alexander Cooley is the Claire Tow Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University and the Vice Provost for Research, Libraries and Academic Centers. Professor Cooley’s research examines how external actors– including international organizations, multinational companies, NGOs, and foreign military bases – have influenced the governance and sovereignty of the former Soviet states, with a focus on Central Asia and the Caucasus. From 2015 to 2021 served as the 15th Director of Columbia University's Harriman Institute for the Study of Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe. As a member of the Office of the Provost he supports and promotes the important programming and research conducted by Barnard's academic centers, faculty and staff across the broader university community, New York City, and globally.Cooley is the author of seven academic books, the most recent (co-authored with Daniel Nexon)– Exit from Hegemony: the Unravelling of the American Global Order– will be published in 2020 by Oxford University Press. He has also written about the multipolar politics of US-Russia-China competition for influence in Central Asia, Great Games, Local Rules: The New Great Power Contest for Central Asia (Oxford 2012), co-authored (with John Heathershaw) Dictators without Borders: Power and Money in Central Asia (Yale 2017) and is co-editor, with Jack Snyder, of Ranking the World: Grading States as a Tool of Global Governance (Cambridge 2015).In addition to his academic research, Professor Cooley serves on several international advisory and policy committees and advises non-for-profits, companies and government actors engaged in Eurasia; he has also testified for the United States Congress, including the House Intelligence Committee and the US-China Security and Economic Commission about Central Asian trends. Cooley's opinion pieces have appeared New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy and he regularly provides commentary to international media outlets on Eurasia-related topics. His research has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Open Society Foundations, Carnegie Corporation, Smith Richardson Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, among others. Cooley earned both his M.A. (1995) and Ph.D. (1999) from Columbia University.
