About Alexander Liptak
A Beamline Scientist at the Diamond Light Source I12-JEEP beamline, collaborating with the National X-ray Computed Tomography (NXCT) research facility. With a background in nuclear physics and high-performance computing, my research interests involve the development, formalisation and optimisation of multimodal X-ray imaging techniques, as well as the sustainable development of scientific software for cluster-capable analysis of big data.I have experience working at large-scale scientific facilities (Diamond Light Source, ISIS Pulsed Neutron and Muon Source), full-stack scientific software development (Slurm, Qt, Python, C++, SQL, InfluxDB, ...), and comprehensive laboratory training (biological, chemical, clean-room, cryogen, gas, laser, and radiation safety).
Listed skills include Python, Latex, Theoretical Physics, Public Speaking, and 32 others.

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Support Scientist (I12-Jeep)
Worked on formalising phase-contrast imaging techniques at the I12-JEEP beamline, including the development of speckle-based phase-contrast acquisition scripts and HPC-optimisation of phase-retrieval and holotomography reconstruction algorithms. Developed scripts for automating tomography alignment and beamline calibration tasks.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Nominated "Teacher of the Year 2023". Led the laboratory sessions and seminars for "Programming Fundamentals" and "Maths and Statistics for AI and Data Science" modules. Supported the laboratory sessions for the "The Internet of Things: Architecture and Applications" module.
Code Development Intern
Developed the testgrids code, a script written in Python 3 that automates the creation, submission and analysis of CASTEP jobs in order to determine the optimal fine-grid size parameter value for that simulation. This script is able to automatically generate custom data sets with varying parameter values, which are then submitted as CASTEP jobs to a SLURM Workload Manager queue. The data from completed (or failed) jobs is then aggregated, analysed, plotted and summarised into both machine- and human-readable files.
Information Technology Support Assistant
Provided IT help in person and over the phone, to customers facing a variety of issues across different operating systems. Often required to handle sensitive information, doing so professionally and with discretion. Also in charge of servicing all computer rooms on the university campus (500+computers, 15+ MFDs). Trained to work with the Footprints enquiry management system (EMS).
Dls Summer Placement Student
Used a combination of a Raspberry Pi 3B+, Arduino Uno and a digital-analog converter to create a smart networked controller for a beamline component that locates samples inside the I14 hard x-ray nanoprobe. The controller can be queried for the physical status of the laser or sent commands to alter the state of the laser via a custom and extensible command set. The syntax for communication is well defined, and is transmitted via a custom protocol that conforms to Diamond’s serial communication protocol standard. Most notable features include modulation of the component’s laser with customisable waveforms, synchronisation of the laser with the component’s camera shutter, and strict software and hardware safety features that were designed to integrate with the instrument’s preexisting setup. Further detail is included in the documentation that can be found on the project page.
Vacation Student
Used the Monte-Carlo simulation package to create a full model of the ISIS OffSpec reflectometer, and used it to model the behaviour of neutrons to make improvements in flux without sacrificing resolution. Ultimately built a universal and portable python script that found optimal slit positions for allresolutions on any instrument, allowing for higher neutron flux without any losses, saving time and money. My script has since been implemented on 3 instruments, giving a flux increase of between 30% and 100% per instrument. In my spare time, I am working on implementing a GUI for the original CLI script.
Disability And Dyslexia Student Helper
Trained to interact with individuals affected by disabilities. Have knowledge and experience with a variety of mental conditions including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, Asperger's syndrome, autism spectrum, etc. Able to take high-quality notes for students unable to do so in their lecture.
Founder
Founded the LexisTech project, a startup company that would deliver electronics repair services as well as software development, website design and consultancy.
Work Experience
As part of my work experience with Softwire, I was required to solve programming challenges using JavaScript, as well as give presentations on a chosen topic. I was also given the opportunity to shadow a few professional software developers, and gain insight into how a small software consultancy company works.
