The UX team at Kisio Digital is committed to designing the best user experience for all users of public transport. We use a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches within an iterative design thinking framework to capture the real needs of users. A project plan may typically include these research activities:Conducting user testing of prototypes in the street, at stop points, and on public transport with citizens to get real-world feedback on what works and what doesn’t.Carrying out interviews with commuters, tourists, and other travellers to discover their likes and dislikes about their journey planning resources.Enrolling interested participants in video diary studies to analyse the end to end use of apps and identify pain points (especially important for MaaS apps). Creating experience maps of people’s trips so we know what they are thinking, feeling, and doing at important moments so we can understand and prioritise needs in the user journey. Running workshops with users and stakeholders to prioritise issues and collaborate on co-design activities.Performing A/B testing or automated online user testing to confirm the size of problems found in street studies. Analysing usage statistics to highlight potential problem areas or to measure the success of implemented design changes. Using these and other methods enables us to build up in-depth profiles of how users think, so we can provide a rich, reliable, and satisfying journey planning experience.

At Five by Five I developed UX strategy for innovation projects in large traditional organisations, including the OECD, Edenred, and SNCF. I also devised and ran multi-day UX workshops for established companies and tech start-ups, covering lean UX techniques and B2B UX.As with previous positions I held, I took every opportunity at 5by5 to evangelise for design thinking and UX ideas. I was the principle UX facilitator at fintech hackathons and other workshops, I chaired panel discussions or took part in them, and I mentored colleagues and clients in UX methodology.

As a freelancer I intervene in most spheres of UX - from strategy and training through to prototyping and testing. In projects where I am the lead UX person, I usually guide clients through the UX process, listening to what they want and then helping to define what they really need. The next step is to outline their requirements in documentation so another team can create a solution, or more often than not, I go ahead and create working prototypes myself. We go through several cycles of design where we negotiate what is good for the business versus what works best for the users, and try to end on a design which is a good balance between the two.
