My scientific career has focused on the development of smart nanotechnologies. Utilizing sophisticated synthetic polymers, functional materials and DNA-based building blocks to construct nanoscale architectures, which are programmed to response to specific changes in their environment. The incorporation of dynamic elements furnishes nanotechnologies with the ability to reconfigure their structure upon shifts in pH, temperature, reactive functionalities and the presence of macromolecules. Primarily for application in nanomedicine including drug delivery, bioimaging and biomarker detection. Currently at Nanovery, developing DNA nanorobots for nucleic acid biomarker detection for use in liquid biopsy and personalised medicine.Alexander William Jackson received his MChem undergraduate degree from Newcastle University in July 2008. He then joined the group of David A. Fulton in September 2008 at the same university to commence his postgraduate studies. His PhD research focused on the preparation of responsive and adaptive polymeric nanoparticles via the utilization of dynamic covalent bonds. In September 2012 he moved to Singapore to take up a position as a research scientist at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) within the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES). During his 8 years in Singapore, he worked on the development complex polymeric architectures possessing diverse functionality, stimuliresponsive behaviour and biodegradability. Primarily for application in bioimaging and drug delivery. At A*Star he worked closely alongside academic and industrial partners to tackle challenging real world problem statements. After returning to Newcastle upon Tyne, in 2020, he joined Nanovery to develop DNA nanorobots for nucleic acid detection in liquid biopsy, specifically for the quantification of RNA therapeutics and biomarkers.
