Immunology Placement Student
I conducted my year in industry as an Immunology Placement Student at Cambridge Research Biochemicals (CRB) which is a leading British custom peptide and antibody provider with up to 40 years of industry expertise. The opportunity to carry out my placement year in this reputable organisation has introduced me to new concepts in biomedicine, namely in antibody production and has helped me to develop scientific skills in an industry setting. With proteins being involved in controlling every essential process in life, the synthesis of custom made peptides and production of novel antibodies has established CRB as an important and reliable supplier to biological research and drug discovery. As a placement student, my main roles were within the laboratories of the immunology department, working alongside the Antibody Project Manager and Immunology Development Manager. A few of the main tasks I carried out included performing Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs), peptide conjugations to larger carrier proteins, affinity purifications and general laboratory tasks such as calibration of equipment and making up standard solutions. As well as working in the laboratories, I gained valuable work experience in the commercial sector of CRB through processing antibody and peptide orders from CRB’s DISCOVERY® Peptides and Antibodies catalogue, using peptide chemistry knowledge to produce peptide flyers and dealing with multiple e-commerce sites. The commercial aspect of CRB has allowed me to familiarise myself with how a small biochemical company runs and how the marketing is carried out. Moreover, I tested different website functions with the company’s Catalogue Manager to improve the web design and provide a better website experience for CRB’s customers. This included testing if VAT costs were correctly applied and ensuring that navigation through the website was easy and effective, allowing ease of purchasing a peptide or antibody.
Counter Sales Assistant
During my summer holiday and first term of second year at university, I worked as a counter sales assistant at the well known British Pharmacy Company, Lloyds Pharmacy. This experience involved direct interaction with customers and locals in the area who came in for their medical queries and medications. I provided exceptional customer service and offered the best solutions in a friendly and professional manner. I put customers at ease with my personable approach and offered them advice to aid them with their queries in a non-judgemental manner, by earning their trust and providing a safe place to talk. This allowed me to develop a good relationship with the customers who I met frequently and asked the relevant questions to deliver the right products. Additionally, I worked well in a small team of pharmacists and dispensers to create a positive synergy and work efficiently to carry out administrative duties.
Customer Service Advisor
Being a part of the team at Teleperformance, a global leader in digitally integrated business services, as a customer service advisor was one of my first formal roles in shaping myself as a professional in a working environment outside of an academic setting. This role involved dealing with incoming calls during peak period to help people with their queries about student loan repayments and dealing with confidential information as well as providing a comfortable setting for customers to ask their questions freely. I was responsible from simple tasks such as resetting passwords and sending out forms to complex issues such as dealing with vulnerable customers with worries about their loans. I practiced oral communication with up to 40 customers per day and showed accuracy in recording of customer notes to enable the next advisor to have a detailed summary. Moreover, I worked in a fast paced environment and delivered outstanding customer care by working quickly but efficiently to minimise customer waiting times.
