Alexandra (Alexa) Nobis (pronouns – she/her) has joined SAMHSA as a Public Health Advisor within the Division of State and Community System’s Development in the State and Homeless Programs Branch. Alexa is a social worker by trade, with clinical experience working with individuals with serious mental illness and substance use disorders as a case manager and clinician. After seeing the many hardships both consumers and providers had while navigating the behavioral health system, she decided to transition into policy work. Alexa graduated from Columbia University with a master’s degree in social work with a Health, Mental Health, and Disability Policy focus. While at Columbia, Alexa interned with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services out of the Region II Office in New York City. After graduation, Alexa moved back to the Midwest to work for the State of Wisconsin. During her 5-year tenure, Alexa worked on a wide variety of both behavioral health and intellectual disability policy projects. Notably, she worked on the Wisconsin Act 178 – Employment First initiative since the legislation was signed into law and became a subject matter expert on the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder functional screening tool. Her skillset and passion lie primarily in collaborating with providers and other community partners to improve healthcare systems. Alexa enjoys traveling, hiking, Olympic lifting, and finding the best latte in town. However, most of her time is spent wrangling her two rescue mutts with her husband and reading an obscene number of books on her Kindle. She is currently based in the Raleigh-Durham area.
