About Alex Crawford
My career has been spent mentoring and supporting student growth. I started as a writing tutor myself, and loved helping others so much, I continued to work with academic support programs in Illinois and even at Stanford! A few things about me: 1. Supporting others is at the core of what I do. In my various roles, I find working individually to support others in their journeys is the most energizing and fun part of what I do. I've served as a first year advisor, Stanford Newcomer Guide, academic coach, and a mentor for students who are on academic probation. Having conversations about how to find success in the classroom brings me a lot of joy!2. I love developing effective training that benefits someone’s overall growth and development regardless of their positions. Over the years I’ve been training peer tutors and academic coaches, surveys have shown over 90% of those who enrolled in one of my training courses or in one of my workshops have reported that the training provided was useful and had a positive impact on their work, their personal growth, and/or the stated learning outcomes. I have worked with faculty to help them better understand how students best learn and how to better connect with students in the classroom.2. At Augustana, I created their very first Peer Academic Coaching program, which included developing a training curriculum, assessments, and ongoing support for the coaches. Programs need a strong foundation, and I used research in the field and combined that with our institutional needs to build this program from the bottom up. Initial data has been showing positive outcomes for students who use our Peer Academic Coaching services.4. Assessing is my JAM. Data is meant to inform decisions rather than being used to support a choice already made. I enjoy diving into the data to see how the programs I run and the suggested interventions with students are working so we can continually improve. I even joined Augustana’s Higher Learning Commission Assessment Academy project because helping others find ways to meaningfully assess their learning outcomes.Got questions or just want to chat?
