Profile bio

About Alex Bossers

I’m a senior scientist in molecular cell biology and omics applications with focus on the One Health and Environmental genomics research domain. After many years of happy PRIONeering research on molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, I moved forward in the wonderful world of bioinformatics and genomics applications. I characterize as an open-science driven collaborator that gets things done, meanwhile grabbing every opportunity to innovate in a wide variety of research fields. At the Institute of Risk Assessment Sciences (UU) I'm currently using metagenomics, environmental DNA (eDNA) and microbiome applications for surveillance and environmental exposure assessment/source attribution modeling, mostly within the human and environmental pillars of the One Health domain. At Wageningen BioVeterinary Research I setup a group specialized in multi-omics and bioinformatics approaches in the fields of molecular epidemiology, infectious agent characterization, and diagnostics/vaccine development, currently mainly covering the veterinary and environment pillars of the One Health domain. My current cross-over position at both IRAS-UU and WBVR-WUR enables me to effectively combine research within the human, environmental and animal pillars of One Health, thereby facilitating the IRAS One Health microbial agents group with (meta)genomics applications for cohort studies while also bringing more environmental context and analysis methods to WBVR. Typical cross-domain projects include the VGO3 project, where metagenomics is used to identify and profile pathogens (bacterial, fungal and viral) on and around goat farms and its close environment potentially linking with acquired pneumonia in humans. Another project highlight is the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) barcoding approaches to assess biosecurity in and around farms, as well as in crossing-over points of wild- and domesticated life. Due to my broad interests, I get typically involved in many projects involving metagenomic/microbiome analysis of humans and animals as well as its resistome. I have a wide experience in setting-up and coordinating public-private partnership projects, I am a board member of the Dutch KNVM division microbial genomics, and I am listed on over 200 peer-reviewed publications. https://scholar.google.com/citations?pli=1&user=BicpLx4AAAAJ Besides my passion for research, I am a full-stack software developer for the Survivalrun Bond Nederland, and in my free-time I'm a Linux enthusiast and guitar-noise maker, addicted to ultra-trailing and adventure racing.

Listed skills include Bioinformatics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Sequencing, and 19 others.
