UMN Biomedical Engineering Dept - Senior Design ClassDuring my senior year, I served as team manager for my senior design group. Our project focused on meeting a currently unfulfilled need in neonatal infant care centers. Working with DesignWise Medical, a non-profit medical device company, we developed a prototype to confirm the concept needed to monitor the infant’s blood oxygen saturation levels and automatically adjust the concentration of oxygen delivered with an oxygen blender. As a manager, I coordinated purchases of device components, monitored the group's progress, and assigned new task to group members based on their strengths and interests to contribute to the group's overall success.
During the summer of 2009 and the subsequent school year, I was involved with an Undergraduate Research Project at the University's Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Laboratory. My project focused on a quantitative clinical assessment of spinal fusion surgeries. The goal of the study was to identify a standard quantity and removal method of intervertebral discs during interbody fusions to promote successful fusions and minimize post-operative pain. Work on this project may lead to advancements toward a less invasive procedural method.
