What I am doing:I have just delivered all Civil Engineering packages for a 266-plot housing development in Wolverhampton by securing S185 and S104 approvals from Severn Trent Water, and S278 and S38 approvals from Wolverhampton City Council. What I am doing: Development of a major junction off the A45 as a gateway to a proposed industrial park in Coventry, West Midlands, UK. Scheme comprises of development of Onslips and Offslips from the A45, an overbridge across the D3AP road, two partly signalised roundabouts, and 3.5km of local access roads to take the traffic onto/off the A45 and from/into the proposed industrial park on either side of the A45. The scheme falls within the boundaries of three local authorities: Highways England, Coventry City Council, and Warwickshire County Council. The requirement is to develop detailed designs based on the current standards for each of the authorities for those sections of the scheme that fall within a given authority.This presents a challenge on the specifications and detailing of design elements, from geometrics, to pavements and sustainable drainage.I developed the pavement design for the whole scheme from projected Design Year classified traffic counts. I produced all detailed drawings, Pavement Reports (3 No., one for each highway authority) and the Specification appendices.I am currently spearheading the development of Designer’s Responses to address Technical Review comments from the three authorities, and updating of drawings (235 drawings) to suit.I am providing engineers with specialist advice and technical leadership/referencing on SHW series 100 to 1200 details.I am championing quality assurance by ensuring that Drawings, Reports, and Specifications are harmonised with current design standards and best practice, and to ensure that the documents themselves are in complete harmony, with cross-referencing up to date.I am executing all the above activities, prioritising tasks under a fluid environment, and producing deliverables under extreme sustained pressure.

Line Manager & Technical training to 3 no. Civil Engineers. Designated Engineer for ICE Chartership Training. Receiving work packages and allocating resources and supervision; management of the design process to ensure compliance with Cost, Time and Quality objectives. Checking of delivery packages for compliance with employer’s requirements and prevailing standards. Spear-heading Civils Designs for all schemes (more than 24 schemes) procured by the Birmingham Office. The schemes included large commercial developments (24 storey apartment complexes with commercial space at ground floors and car parking within the basements), schools, housing schemes, laboratories, etc. Included liaising with the structures team in developing all civils works for the schemes including internal foul drainage, surface water drainage, Surface water drainage, external surfaces (pavements), access roads (S38), junctions to the main road (S278). Sustainable Drainage based on Building Regulations Part H, SFA7, and CIRIA report C753. Managing the team throughout the design process: water companies (Initial Enquiries, Developer Enquiries, S185 Diversions, Build-Over agreements, S106 connections), Lead Local Flood Authorities (Planning Package for Civils), Client (Tender Package), and Preparation of Construction Package. Compliance with CDM 2015 by completing DRAs, showing residual risks onto drawings, producing O&M Manuals and ensuring inclusion in the Health and Safety File. Planning & delivering under extreme sustained pressure. High level meetings with office directors, structures team leadership, architects, contractors on site, M&Es, client, LLFAs, third parties, etc. Ensuring that civils outputs are ideal for inclusion into the BIM model. Preparing Fee proposals for Civils Works for inclusion into company bids, and for budget control. Value Engineering schemes past Planning stage at Construction Stage to help D&B contractor to maximise profit but maintaining fit-for-purpose objective.

Hands-on design of highway alignments using MX and Sustainable Drainage using Micro-drainage. Pavement and Road Restraint Systems design. Alex also provides technical training to junior staff.
