Conducting an independent research study with Dr. Kendall Bustad through the School of Public Health analyzing the intersectional impacts of race/ethnicity and poverty and chronic kidney disease. We are placing emphasis on how microaggressions and racial, socioeconomic, gender and educational biases contribute to negative experiences within healthcare for vulnerable populations, how this and other factors lead to increased mistrust in the medical system and with medical providers, further exacerbating inequitable healthcare. Thus, we hope to collect primary feedback to determine how negative experiences with healthcare and racial/SES biases can impact accessibility to equitable healthcare. At this point in our research, we have constructed a survey that has been proof-read by a Nephrologist at a University of Maryland Medical School Dialysis center. In addition, I have earned my CITI Social and Behavioral Research Basic/Refresher and Responsible Conduct Certifications, with the intention of applying for IRB approval to pilot our survey to focus groups to ensure its effectiveness. Our goal is to then disseminate the survey to a dialysis center in Baltimore Maryland.
