As part of my college placement, I was based on site in Dungourney as a student engineer. Despite the impact of Covid-19 my placement was not affected as I was still able to be on site every day. This proved to be hugely beneficial as I got to put in to practice what I had studied at university.The job involved building warehouses for Irish Distillers. Fortunately, there are a few warehouses being built at a time and they’re all at different stages so I was able to see a project to completion. My practical duties included surveying using a GPS, setting out hold down bolts for columns in foundations using an EDM and levelling using a dumpy level or laser level. All of this information was obtained by reading and interpreting technical drawings. Responsibilities also included inducting new people on site, filing plant certs and keeping track of employees’ training records and employees’ SPAs/Permits to Work. Every Friday, I did a safety audit of the site with the site manager. On days where a large amount of concrete was being poured or the block layers reached the top of a wall a large amount of scaffolding needed to come down, I would help out however I could and would act as an extra pair of hands for the carpenters or scaffolders.

During my time in MaREI, I worked in collaboration with many different people and projects but most of my time was spent focused on two.I worked on a 3D print project in collaboration with DePuy which involved research on the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of 3D printing in industry versus more traditional manufacturing methods. This was in preparation for an upcoming SFI funding proposal.I also worked on a project in collaboration with IERG, where I was required to put together documents positioning their research areas within their wider research landscape.

I worked as an operator on the production line in a GMP manufacturing facility which produces contrast media products. This involved following SOPs and filling out batch documentation to carry out tasks.
