When I was school-age, I WISH I had been given the understanding of how rewarding a career in manufacturing could be, particularly in a clean technology market like batteries. Back when I was 16, the careers advice didn’t stretch far beyond cliché jobs.I’ve been fortunate on two fronts:Firstly, my parents, teachers, managers and mentors over the years gave me a first-class education in high standards, hard work and humility. Secondly, the businesses I have worked at have given me opportunity after opportunity over the years, developing my understanding of the business, its products, markets and customers while also forcing me to work hard on my soft skills and personal development.At 25 years old with no career to speak of, just a few years of work experience in a small business with 12 permanent staff, I entered a small, simple office in Slough nearly twenty years ago and started in VARTA’s Customer Service...By the time I left, I’d gained years of experience in product sales, solution sales, marketing, PR, go-to-market planning, managing customers, managing suppliers, working with colleagues and leading teams, product development, project management and so much more.Having lived in Germany for almost 7 years (wow), I returned to the UK to marry my now wife and start our family which has been nothing short of incredible.Now, at Alexander Battery Technologies, I’ve been taught by the performance of every member of the team that being world class is not just a result to achieve but a discipline to pursue. Bringing the right spirit and energy to each other consistently, we’ve driven rapid change and developed the business to exciting new heights. I've also been extremely glad to be part of an industry which interacts more and more with cutting-edge businesses looking to drive carbon emissions (theirs and all of ours) to zero with new products and technologies. Having been able to work with customers and partners to deliver solutions for energy storage, agricultural and commercial robotics and niche electric vehicles has been a wonderful benefit.We can’t get it right every single day but returning to your standards consistently and working openly to encourage each other to develop and implement new insights will help you to achieve amazing things as a group.Having the privilege to create a new go-to-market plan, hire and develop the full team along with its tools and processes is the fulfilment of the dreams I didn't quite know I had when I was 15.Thanks to everyone who's been there with me for their part of the trip.
