I conduct studies with pediatric patients who present with respiratory or gastrointestinal illness symptoms. This research with the CDC looks at infection patterns of viruses to improve vaccines and preventative health measures for at-risk populations. Each shift, I interview patients to determine their symptoms, eligibility, and interest. If their legal guardian consents, I then ask for medical history and demographics. Lastly, I collect nasal swabs or stool samples for laboratory analysis. Interacting extensively with patients, I have acquired direct clinical experience that has expanded my awareness of current medical issues and the data acquisition behind public health decisions.

My position gave me responsibility over the kids every moment, day and night, for a month. The program accepted 30 international students to improve their English at an American school. I taught a writing class, tutoring those who struggled during study hall. I also served as a mentor living with them in the dorms and helped them adjust to living away from their parents. With their ages ranging from 9 to 17 years old, I had to resolve a variety of situations, from homesickness to petty fights. I additionally organized memorable experiences – field trips, bonfires, kickball with local summer camps – in which the students could bond as a group and immerse themselves in American culture.
