During my placement year, I worked in the Development, Alumni Relations and Events (DARE) department at Kingston University. My duties included• Maintaining the contacts management database Raiser’s Edge (RE) and NetCommunity (online Alumni portal).• Regularly updating the database, creating complex queries, and importing data using advanced imports and field mappings.• Training others (Trained over 10 people) and provided tech support regarding RE and general computer related issues to department and external RE users. • Updated and improved training materials and introduced short one page HowTo documents and checklists.• Developed new processes such as faster methods of manipulating and importing data into the database with supportive tools such as Excel macros and AbleBits. • Introduced tools such as ClipMate for advanced copy and paste functionality and created executable files of some tools for easy distribution and installation across the organization.

I was a teaching assistant for first year module Business Organization & Practice. This involved answering students’ questions, checking their progress in the workshops, going through their work and if there is something wrong instead of correcting it guide them so they can come up with a solution themselves.

As a mentor my job was to instruct and guide first year students about their IT modules namely IT Toolbox 1 and 2 as well as other module. This usually involved explaining coding, scripting, setting up LAMP or WAMP, IDEs and general computer related concepts. I delivered weekly group sessions where I encouraged them to develop problem solving skills and develop team working skills.
