After spending over 12 years as a corporate and commercial lawyer in private practice I moved to Bupa in 2012 to take up an in house solicitor role which I held for 2 years. I moved to UBT in February 2015 as the first in house lawyer to create the legal function in a fast changing rapidly expanding business. I advised on all areas of general commercial law, risk and compliance. I also assisted with various other areas such as employment law. Starting the department from scratch I created a precedent bank with drafting and guidance notes for key documents for the business. I also produced a contract database to assist with contract management.Data protection is also a key element of my role and I prepared the business for the GDPR provisions coming into effect in 2018. This includes a data audit, policy review and new data consent forms. I also implemented a risk management process to identify and minimise risk as well as leading a risk committee. I regularly brief all members of staff update with relevant changes in law and explaining how the changes effect the business.A key part of my role was reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of contractual documentation including supplier agreement, rebate commission contracts, consulting agreement and various terms and conditions. I also managed the company's and its subsidiaries insurance portfolio, as well as keeping up to date with our Companies House filing requirements. I gained a great deal of satisfaction from supervising and mentoring junior members of the team.

A key element of my role was to provide sound, practical legal advice to the business and ensure that the advice is aligned with the needs and priorities of the business.I was the lead contact for all corporate health trust renewals, new business and general queries, supervising junior members of the team working in this busy and growing area of business. I worked closely with the sales teams on the submission of tender bids for company health insurance schemes or for the set up and administration corporate health trusts. This included working to very tight deadlines and negotiating away from the tender terms and conditions to reflect the insurance elements of the process and explaining why their standard terms and conditions are not suitable in this particular instance rather than simply wanting to use Bupa standard terms and conditions. I was also involved in drafting revisions to the membership guides that apply to health insurance schemes for both consumer and business to business markets working in conjunction with senior UK market team members.Other day-to-day aspects of the role included reviewing, negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial contracts in a financial services environment ensuring that the terms and conditions of contracts and other commitments with customers, suppliers and business partners are appropriate. This covered a wide ranging area including sales and marketing, advertising and brand support, as well as procurement contracts with suppliers of IT support systems and new innovative way to track health initiatives such as the ground miles app.Protecting the Bupa name, reputation and intellectual property was a key part of my role. I also assisted the customer complaints team deal with issues when they escalate including drafting appropriate responses and in some instances taking over the handling of the complaint when litigation is contemplated.
