I was also responsible for the continual performance management of the English and maths team, which included conducting formal observations and walk-throughs of lessons, setting up development action plans, annual appraisals and designing aspirational targets for individuals linked to their performance. In this role, I was also accountable for monitoring and evaluating the quality of courses within the portfolio including all success measures such as attendance and punctuality, retention, achievement and progression. As Head of School I led the teaching staff in English and maths in challenging lateness and absence with students and liaised with vocational course teams to ensure that the subjects were promoted and prioritised in courses. This was a particular key focus area and, following the delivery of English and maths enhancement programmes, vocational teachers also delivered some foundation courses (Level 1 and 2).It was also my responsibility to ensure that students were enrolled on the appropriate programme of study and examination for their level and that the English and maths courses were an embedded part of student study programmes. This also meant liaising and working very closely with vocational course leaders to ensure that the English and maths team provided assistance to other staff in the College so that they were better able to embed these skills in their own teaching and learning sessions. In addition to the 16-19 year study programmes, I also co-ordinated programme activities for adult GCSE classes (evenings and weekends ) and ensured that these were appropriately staffed, resourced and covered throughout the year, liaising closely with relevant support staff.
