During the COVID19 initial lockdown I learned of EKFH whilst making masks to donate to people in Edinburgh. I volunteered as a driver to help deliver day packs of meals to people in need across Edinburgh. It started as an idea between a small group of out-of-work chefs in the end of March 2020. Today it is an initiative staffed by 400+ volunteers who work 7 days a week to give everyone in Edinburgh safe access to healthy food. To date, Empty Kitchens has provided over 190,000 meals, totally free of charge without any government or corporate funding.Each and every meal is provided free of charge, with no judgement or means testing to anyone who asks for help for as long as they need it. This might be a few days to bridge a gap or ongoing support for single people, couples or families. This is an essential service so will continue to deliver even as the COVID levels change.
