Co-Lead - High School Sustainability Club

• I was a leader of my school's sustainability club• To influence people to compost, we started a compositing competition, where elementary classes would bring their compost bins to us every Thursday for us to sort through, and we would search for and record any material within the composting bin that was not compostable• At the end of each month, the class that had the least amount of contaminated material within their bins throughout the course of the month would win a prize• Our sustainability club also pursued an aeroponic gardening initiative, and we were granted $2500 to purchase test gardens when we pitched our project to the Rotary club of Canmore• We each grew gardens over the course of a year, measuring water intake, electricity consumption, and crop yield in order to define whether or not these gardens are an efficient alternative to grocery store shopping• The next step in our initiative was implementing these gardens within our school• Each garden was given to one elementary classroom, and we worked with these classes to grow their own plants, mentoring the kids on how to set up the gardens and take care of them• We also competed in the 2022 Earth Prize, a global sustainability competition for students between the ages of 13 and 19• We were recognized as a top 34 team out of 650 teams. Some of my specific responsibilities within this club included organizing the composting competition data• After our Thursday sortings, I would take the data sheets for each class and transfer them to a digital document, in which I would perform calculations to determine the winner for each month. I was also the first member of our club to take home a growing garden and collect data from it.

Team Lead - Sustainable Event Planning Software Project

• I led a sustainable event planning software project called CO2 EASY• CO2 EASY provides a carbon calculator that allows attendees to determine their CO2 emissions for attending an event (as well as the trees needed to offset their emissions)• The attendees are also given an offsetting guide which contains a list of companies that provide carbon offsetting services, whether it be through planting trees or donating to climate action projects• Finally, the attendees are given a list of sustainable hotels and restaurants that they can use during their travels• This project was presented as a side project in iGEM 2021. Prior to iGEM, this project was pitched in the 2021 Tech Futures Challenge by MindFuel, where we were approached by the CEO of Mobility Quotient Calgary who offered us mentorship for preparing the project for iGEM• Some of my key roles within this side project were creating our project’s promotional video for the Tech Futures Challenge, and working on our project’s business model canvas• Most notably, I coded our project’s prototype. Over the summer, I self taught myself the basics of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP to create the prototype in time for iGEM• I also conducted meetings with the software company CEO, where he reviewed my code and helped me resolve any technical issues that I had. By iGEM, I had built a prototype of CO2 Easy, with components such as a login and registration form, the CO2 and tree planting calculator, as well as an interactive offsetting guide and list of sustainable facilities

• iGEM is an international synthetic biology competition for high school, undergraduate and graduate teams• Our team developed OXYBEGONE, an oxybenzone detector designed to provide an effective and affordable way to measure concentrations of oxybenzone in aquatic ecosystems, as compounds like oxybenzone have been proven to cause coral bleaching as well as act as an endocrine disruptor, resulting in hormonal imbalances in fish and even mammals• My most significant role throughout this project was conducting our project 3D modelling. I used modelling software such as PyMOL and CB-Dock to analyze the interactions between the oxybenzone molecule and the human estrogen receptor, as well as the GEM protein of our plasmidI also created our project promotional and presentation videos, both of which are available on the iGEM website• In addition, I did project outreach, I conducted interviews with the President of SustainDriven and a local pharmacist in order to become more educated on the feasibility and possible implementation of our project• Our team received the iGEM Silver Level of Achievement for International Genetic Engineering Projects when competing in iGEM 2021
