Aliyah Davis Email and Phone Number
I am a UCSC Environmental Studies Alumna with a year and a half worth of research experience in fisheries science at UCSC and Tohoku University. At Tohoku, I conducted genetics research on the white-spotted char species that I presented in August 2024, and at UCSC I was apart of a USDA-funded research experiment assessing the nutrient digestibility of rainbow trout aquaculture being fed fish feed containing micro-algal byproduct. Looking forward, I am interested in pursuing environmental law, and am actively looking for opportunities in the field to broaden my skillset while studying for the LSAT to best prepare myself for law school. My engagement with the preservation of genetic diversity and the improved sustainability of aquafeeds across aquatic species, water resource management, agroecology, and environmental policy underpins my commitment to environmental stewardship and science. Having participated in a collaborative water research roadmap with students from Egypt and having lived in Japan for my own research, I understand the importance of bringing diverse perspectives and collaborative energy to each project that I am apart of.

ReaderUniversity Of California, Santa Cruz Oct 2024 - PresentSanta Cruz County, California, United StatesI currently grade and provide feedback for student submissions to Professor Brent Haddad's Sustainable Water Systems course (ENVS 165). -
Undergraduate ResearcherTohoku University Mar 2024 - Aug 2024Sendai, Miyagi, JapanI worked under Associate Professor Masamichi Nakajima doing conservation genetics research on the endangered white-spotted char (Salvelinus leucomaenis). I collect dorsal and caudal fin tissue samples at various locations within Miyagi prefecture which I extract DNA from, and then perform density modification, PCR, SAP, DNA purification, and Sanger sequencing experiments. I assessed the genetic relativity between the white-spotted char and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), and expect to present my research findings in early August. -
Undergraduate ResearcherUniversity Of California, Santa Cruz Mar 2023 - Apr 2024Santa Cruz, California, United StatesI worked at the Kapuscinski - Sarker Laboratory under Professor Pallab Sarker participating in a USDA-funded experiment assessing the phosphorous digestibility of micro-algae fish feed in rainbow trout aquaculture. When I initially joined the lab, my responsibilities included system maintenance and fish care for 16 individual recirculating aquaculture systems in our aquaculture greenhouse. I later became responsible for laboratory work doing biochemical analysis, data analytics, sample processing, and acid digestion of samples. -
Outdoor EducatorThe Bird School Project Mar 2022 - Jun 2022Santa Cruz, California, United StatesI led lessons about nature-based observation and bird identification to grade-school children throughout Santa Cruz County. Lessons emphasized critical thinking and the importance of the questions we ask as a result of observation. I lectured about basic ornithology indoors. Afterward students were taken into the schoolyard with binoculars and field guides. I also led bird-watching parties at the following community events: Monterey Festival of Birds, Watsonville Earth Day Festival and Natural Bridges State Beach Migration Festival.
