Technical Lead in NNL's Nuclear and Reactor Physics Team focused on Clean Energy and Nuclear Health and Medicine

As a scientist within NNL's Nuclear Physics team, I am responsible for the successful delivery of research and projects based around the management of nuclear waste and the long-term development of the UK nuclear industry. A selection of my achievements include:- Using the FISPIN fuel inventory code, I have run modelling calculations that support regulatory accountabilities for customers and delivery of related research into the decommissioning of legacy nuclear facilities- I've led on a portion of NNL's work with Lynkeos Technology to successfully install and commission a Muon Imaging System on a nuclear-licensed site, demonstrating progress through technology readiness levels- I've taken responsibility for ensuring succession planning is built into long term customer work, ensuring that skills are spread throughout the team for future resilience

Working in a small, integrated team with a key customer, I supported the development and delivery of a change programme designed to improve the client-supplier relationship. This involved having a deep understanding of client and company expectations and requirements, to be able to help shape the strategic agenda and support implementation of this at a tactical and operational level.I showed an aptitude for taking a proactive approach to solving issues, picking up on concerns of stakeholders across both organisations and looking for win-win solutions in the development of the programme.As part of the programme of work, I produced and developed the programme blueprint (using the MSP methodology) and worked with all stakeholders to ensure this reflected the most appropriate steps. This then led to me being a key resource when detailing the full benefits realisation for the change programme to external stakeholders, having a detailed knowledge of the programme design and related impacts.Alongside this, I was responsible for the development of a measures process that enabled appropriate oversight of the whole relationship, including delivery performance and relevant tactical indicators. With in-depth design to ensure that measures drive behaviours aligned with the change programme outcomes, these measures form a critical element in the ultimate success of the programme.

Responsible for the development and delivery of The Spark! Contest network. After three years of the successful Anglo-French contest, I have joined the committee to make sure that our network of Spark! alumni continue to be involved and benefit from the contest.Since joining the committee I have delivered an expansion of our engagement with network members through the addition of an alumni mentoring process, secured a new sponsor organisation and delivered a brand new event on the Spark! calendar, which was well received and reviewed by attendees.

Working within a DevOps environment and a wider focus on cost efficiency, I developed and was responsible for key time and cost saving measures using PowerShell automation for Microsoft and VMware technologies. When working on tasks, I showed an aptitude for constantly looking for better and delivering improvements to processes that reduced their time and cost impacts. Highlight included:- Delivery of automation that enabled an upgrade of an ~1000 VM VMware ESXi 5.1 environment to VMware ESXi 6.0 with zero additional downtime to clients and completed in business hours- Automation of routine QA testing that reduced contractor hours on task by a factor of 8- Build, install and testing of a full VMware production environment in a rapid turnaround to enable migration from a Hyper-V environment with poor uptime performance causing sever business impacts- Development of VM maintenance and upgrade processes that reduced system downtime and removed human error traps- Working with applications teams to diagnose poor application performance and provide feedback to vendors that enabled successful deployment

Working in addition to my studies, I supported delivery of the eXepert with the University of Exeter Careers Service. This matched alumni volunteers to current and former students for advice on specific careers related questions.In the year, working with my colleague, we delivered a more than 20% improvement in applications to the scheme and related successful matches. I refined the process for managing this, to reduce the required effort and successfully deliver the service with increased applicants and no additional resources.

As an Industrial Placement student I led delivery of a research project into innovative techniques for non-destructive testing of composite materials. Focusing on system development I reduced scan times on a prototype scanning device from hours to seconds before applying innovative data processing techniques to produce heat maps of material quality.
