Working alongside the head of the mechanical engineering department at UCD, the research conducted was around friction and wear conditions on SLM Manufactured titanium while working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to determine changes in the mechanical properties of parts made on additive manufacturing machines based on the location of the part on the print-bed. The scope of the research has been expanded to include other 3D printed materials such as aluminum as well as PLA and other polymers.

I worked under the guidance of Ben Lieberman and Jim Lieberman as well as John Elliott, a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer. While on the job, I gained experience using AutoCAD software creating floorplans of client businesses that were used for layout design of extraction systems and large industrial equipment. On projects, I was tasked with creating and editing peer reviews of client businesses equipment and safety protocol. I would also help determine proper extraction equipment for client businesses that would provide the best quality and followed government safety standards.

A small group of my peers and I were given a task by NASA to find a solution to. In our case, we were to create a way of dispensing and holding duct tape and Kapton tape for use on the International Space Station. NASA advisers would watch our progress on the project and near the end of the term, be presented the solution we had come up with. Our project was impressive to the NASA program leaders, who granted our team a second year to work on the design. Through monthly checks over the year, our project would later go into final production and be sent to the International Space Station for use by the astronauts on board.
