For the last 7 years, I have been the lead Sr Software Architect for an innovation research and design team at Level 3 Communications (now CenturyLink) designing and developing HTML5 and mobile applications. The team works with C level management and Vice Presidents to identify opportunities where Information Technology would create a competitive advantage for the company. After an opportunity is identified, I lead the team of software architects collaborating in searching and designing possible solutions. I would then present the options and estimated cost/benefit to the executive sponsor. Utilizing Scrum and DevOps methodologies we successfully delivered solutions. As an example, the CIO stated that our sales effectiveness mobile application, “Was an once and a life time achievement.” For another project, we engaged with the CEO to deliver his dream application of a Sales Engineer network design solution. The web application allows Sales Engineers to build customer network solutions by drag and drop icons which builds diagrams, collects technical details, transfers the data to quoting and sales systems while meeting with the customer. The estimated cost savings for the first year using the application was over 20 million dollars.

The Sun's instance of the Oracle 11i Suite was running in a data center which the lease was expiring. The fail over procedure to the DR environment was never tested. The system needed to remain up for the service assurance team. I lead a team of Oracle Application DBAs in practicing the disaster recovery process and refining it so that the data center switch over so that it could be done without service interruption.Web based applications may have security vulnerabilities. I joined the team that analyzes the internal applications for security issues. Sometimes development teams did not believe they had band width to fix the problems. I would help identify how to fix the problem and help create an action plan to make their applications secure.

Sun Microsystems grew rapidly during the 90s without much focus on enterprise, system or application architecture. There was not a standard methodology being used in designing solutions. I joined the Sun Services architecture team where we adopted the 3 dimensional architecture methodology ( 3DM aka SunTone) and developed documentation standards for the application and system architectures. We worked with the enterprise architecture team in identifying the system of records and go forward applications. This allowed the team to identify opportunities for application consolidation which resulted in cost savings.Many of applications used by Sun Microsystems had aging software components without a clear modernization plan. It was determined that consolidating on the Oracle 11i Suite would standardize business processes and reduce costs over maintaining the older legacy systems. I joined the team to develop the technical and deployment architectures for this project. There was over 150 virtual servers deployed in the solution in which created the functional, technical and deployment architecture documentation. The documentation was used by the deployment teams to communicate the over all system architecture. This allowed for team members to visualize the complex solution as a map saving much time when bring new members on board.
