Forestry Technician
CurrentFieldwork and Data Collection• Collected forest inventory and monitoring data including: line-point intersect, LiDAR, coarse woody debris, basal area, DBH, height and crown height with hypsometer and clinometer, snag transects, crown class, disturbances, and life stage.• Researched plot design and data from forest inventories taken 20 years ago, and recreated the plots to collect post treatment data.• Input data collected at monitoring plots to Excel, then analyzed.• Catalogued trail maintenance needs, re-route paths, and placement of interpretive kiosks.• Catalogued erosion and invasive species using Survey123.Writing, Publications, and Presentations• Created procedures pertaining to forestry monitoring, trail maintenance, and photo monitoring.• Created materials to onboard new employees and organize field outings.• Created a field guide for the Jemez mountain area for use in fieldwork.Published two articles to the LANL Annual Sitewide Environmental Report on per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water and the Forest Health Program at LANL.• Presented in the Society of American Foresters conference.• Created a Communication Plan for use with stakeholders, customers, and sponsors with an updatable tracker on when and how the Plan was used.• Presented in the 2023 Wildfire Camp on forest inventory monitoring and metrics.Project Management and Leadership• Mentored two students by overseeing student projects and initiating into LANL.• Lead field crews of 4-7 members for forest monitoring.• Trained in invasive species identification and management techniques.• Navigate GIS applications, add points and layers, and create maps.Outreach• Curated a virtual hike podcast for the community on Earth Day consisting of ecological facts.• Planned, wrote, and published two interactive websites with multiple pages for use by LANL.• Planned and directed an Earth Day Trails Walk/Run with 135 participants.
