Libraries are filled with books and more, but it's the patrons and the people who work there who make the experience important. I believe that each will remember the way they were treated at the library and how they felt when they left. I am a forward-thinking, creative, enthusiastic librarian who's excited about working with people of all ages, books, and early literacy. One of the things I love best about being a librarian is the versatility and unexpected adventures. In the summer of 2017, I coordinated a Skype videoconference with over 100 children and two NASA astronauts on the International Space Station. Who would have thought that a librarian could do that? In my role as Head of Public Services at Scranton Library in Madison, I acted as the Assistant Director, Head of Circulation, and Facilities Manager. I've learned how to budget for the library, handle personnel issues, and forecast the future of the library. I enjoy managing 8 staff members and encouraging their growth and development in our department. As Facilities Manager, I understand the workings of our geothermal system, HVAC, and all of the parts that make the library run efficiently. At the East Haddam Library System I am excited have initiated the library’s first-ever strategic plan. I’ve worked diligently to increase communication between the two libraries and within the community. I am in the process of researching plans to build a new library for our town that will showcase our library as the jewel of the community. I have created a quarterly newsletter, write weekly library articles for the newspaper, and have updated our budget and scheduling systems. I know that collaborating with the community partners is imperative. I created the Godspeed Good Neighbor program, which provides residents with two free tickets to performances at the local theater. I strive to educate our staff and encourage them to grow in their professional knowledge. We have created our first Staff Development Day that will focus on safety concerns, reader’s advisory, and customer service. I have worked to add policies to our library for collection development, unattended children, and more. We have organized a committee to concentrate on adding a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement to our mission.
