About Allison Murphy
Libraries are filled with books and more, but it's the patrons and the people who work there who make the experience important. I believe that each will remember the way they were treated at the library and how they felt when they left. I am a forward-thinking, creative, enthusiastic librarian who's excited about working with people of all ages, books, and early literacy. One of the things I love best about being a librarian is the versatility and unexpected adventures. In the summer of 2017, I coordinated a Skype videoconference with over 100 children and two NASA astronauts on the International Space Station. Who would have thought that a librarian could do that? In my role as Head of Public Services at Scranton Library in Madison, I acted as the Assistant Director, Head of Circulation, and Facilities Manager. I've learned how to budget for the library, handle personnel issues, and forecast the future of the library. I enjoy managing 8 staff members and encouraging their growth and development in our department. As Facilities Manager, I understand the workings of our geothermal system, HVAC, and all of the parts that make the library run efficiently. At the East Haddam Library System I am excited have initiated the library’s first-ever strategic plan. I’ve worked diligently to increase communication between the two libraries and within the community. I am in the process of researching plans to build a new library for our town that will showcase our library as the jewel of the community. I have created a quarterly newsletter, write weekly library articles for the newspaper, and have updated our budget and scheduling systems. I know that collaborating with the community partners is imperative. I created the Godspeed Good Neighbor program, which provides residents with two free tickets to performances at the local theater. I strive to educate our staff and encourage them to grow in their professional knowledge. We have created our first Staff Development Day that will focus on safety concerns, reader’s advisory, and customer service. I have worked to add policies to our library for collection development, unattended children, and more. We have organized a committee to concentrate on adding a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement to our mission.

Director Of East Haddam Library System
I believe that libraries are about community, connection, and cultivating lifelong learning. Managing these two historic and beloved libraries in the heart of East Haddam is exciting and enlightening and has helped to fulfill this dream. I enjoy collaborating with distinct partners in the community, such as the Goodspeed Opera House and the East Haddam Historical Society. I know it is important to preserve the past of this library system and look forward to what we can innovate in the future.
Head Of Public Services
Libraries are about connecting people with great materials, as well as helping them learn new ideas, meet other library patrons, and feel a part of their community. My job as Head of Public Services had three distinct roles. I act as Assistant Director, representing the library in public functions, meetings, and in day-to-day activities. I also managed the busy borrowing desk as Head of Circulation. As the Head of Facilities, I consulted with maintenance crews, monitored the physical plant, and oversaw the building and grounds. Eight staff members reported to me, and I love fostering their growth and development within our library.
Children'S Librarian-Early Literacy Specialist
One of the most unique parts of my job was initiating and coordinating a Skype visit with NASA astronauts on the International Space Station, which was the high point of our summer reading program. I incorporate Every Child Ready to Read practices in all my story times and focus on sharing early literacy tips with families. I’ve spoken at state and national meetings and conferences about early literacy and children’s programs. I love training and mentoring new and aspiring children’s librarians through the library and ALSC Mentorship program. I purchase materials for our collection and provide reader’s advisory for anyone who needs help.
