In the 1980s I watched friends and colleagues becoming increasingly unwell as HIV took its' toll on their immune system. I began volunteering with The Food Chain, a charity providing nutritional services to people living with HIV. I realised just how important good nutrition is for people living with HIV, and so I trained in nutrition and dietetics and began working in the NHS. For the last 25 years I have been working at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital in London, specialising in HIV, whilst continuing to volunteer at The Food Chain. I was awarded a Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship from the National Institute for Health Research, and from 2013 until 2016 I investigated the potential to prevent type 2 diabetes in HIV patients, as part of a role for nutrition as a therapy to slow an accelerating ageing process apparent in people living with HIV.I am now a Consultant Dietitian at the King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. At Guy's I lead the multidisciplinary team providing care for people living with complex obesity, while still leading nutritional care for people living with HIV. I also work at King's College London, teaching and researching in the Nutritional Sciences department. I am module lead for Professional Practice for postgraduate dietetic students, and teach on a range of topics including metabolism, infectious diseases, behaviour change, and communication skills. I also supervise student research projects at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital.
