I had the opportunity to shadow a project manager on a refurbishment project. My responsibilities included weekly contact with the client via e-mail and phone, assisting the project manager with organising dates for establishment closure for renovation, writing strategies and briefs for the designers to follow and managing budgets and deadlines for re-opening. I managed and posted to the companies social media pages using a strategy I created by taking into account what days and times people were most active on social media; there was a huge increase in traffic and activity to their Facebook and Instagram pages during this time. Since the refurbishment, the client has noted a significant increase in patron and positive feedback.

To get real hands on experience leading a team, BMW Mini set a project via the university to improve their exhibition space and overall tour. I was placed in a team where English wasn’t their first language, which provided a barrier for our project - however, we managed to find a mutual understanding in communication using images and keywords. My team of designers focused on giving more information on an area of the tour which wasn’t accessible to the public due to health and safety, The Paint Shop. During this project, I had to create project plans using MS Project whilst giving the client updates on the project twice a week through e-mails, supporting my team and giving constructive criticism on their designs for improvement, writing daily logs and reports, conducting observational research, managing project risk, development and management of budget and ensuring client satisfaction. The project was an overall success and three out of four members of my team were chosen to pitch their idea to the managing directors of the BMW Mini Oxfordshire Plant.

Working in retail has provided me with the opportunity to develop many of my skills. On a daily basis, I was cash handling, interacting with new people every day and building customer relationships, communicating with line managers and colleagues on tasks, working in a pressured environment, handling difficult situations, utilizing time to meet department deadlines.

In my undergraduate degree, I was placed as Project Manager for a personal development module. I managed a short film production project for the Coventry based charity, Grapevine, which bought awareness of disabled children. We followed and got to know one child of the charities choosing and created a digital video showing what he’s accomplished. This particular project involved a lot of client communication to organise filming times and places; as well as looking into regulations on filming laws, organisation and leases of equipment, managing the designers with daily communication via meetings and using video editing software and Adobe After Effects.
