Stream Restoration is a multimillion dollar industry where dams are removed from streams in order to restore streams to their original single channel meander. According to a paper published in 2008 by Robert Walter and Dorothy Merritts, a single meandering channel may not be the original channel of the river. I spent the summer of 2011 researching with Professor Wilch at Albion College. I spent time at the Calhoun County Drain Commissioner's office and many local libraries researching the milling history of the upper and lower branches of the Kalamazoo River in order to understand how the gradient of the river is affected by the many mill runs and dams constructed in the 1800's and early 1900's. I provided a report on the mills in Margeno, Homer, Marshall, Albion, and Concord at the end of my study so future students could continue my work by coring mill ponds and looking at LIDAR images of current and past dams.
