• Conduct daily procedures in a GLP lab• Perfuse animals and dissect out specific parts of the brain• Familiarity with small laboratory animal anatomy including rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits• Preform dissection, tissue collection/preservation, fresh tissue trimming, and sample collection on small laboratory animals• Process various types of blood samples• Harvest tissues using aseptic technique for PCR analysis• Record data and review lab documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and study specific requirements• Administer IV injections in rabbits and IP injections on rodent pups• Review end of study data and assist in the preparation of deviations and other documentation resulting from internal reviews and/or audits• Examine rat, mouse, and rabbit fetuses for external and internal abnormalities, including major heart vessels • Lead tech on multiple studies varying in difficulty. This includes: Reviewing and interpreting study protocols and preparing the necessary data forms and materials needed to complete the necropsy portion of a study
• Daily care for rats and mice in an array of studies, both naïve and with severe spinal cord injuries• Perform surgeries, including a T2 laminectomy followed by a complete T3 transection to induce spinal injury• Perform surgical prep and post-operative care for rats and mice• Study and care for mice and rats in a BSL2 barrier and conventional facility• Administer subcutaneous and intraperitoneal injections to rats and mice, both naïve and with severe spinal cordinjuries• Euthanize, perfuse, dissect, and properly store various tissues for data analysis• Various cryosectioning of spinal cord tissue and immunohistochemistry staining• Protein extraction and quantification from fresh tissue• Extracting DNA from animal tissue and run PCR in order to phenotype 7 lines of mice ( 2 being triple transgenic)• Support the maintenance of BSL2 barrier transgenic mouse breeding colonies and genotyping (via PCR)• Assist in radiotelemetry and real-time physiological recordings of cardiac activity in injured rats
• Feed dogs and properly administer various medication• Work with coworkers in the same position to make each day’s schedule in order to accomplish expected goals• Recognize body language of dogs and break up fights if necessary, during “play time”• Clean kennel area• Provide minor first aid to dogs• Handle “hard to manage” dogs (crate/food aggression, lead biting, anxiety, high energy, etc.)• Time manage each group’s playtime so that every group has time within our shift• Memorize dogs’ names and place them into play groups by size and temperament• Train new employees
• Observe daily vet responsibilities as well as client interactions• Observe small animal soft tissue surgery • Observe and occasionally participate in patient appointments
