Ever since I was little, I've always had large ambitions, and always wanted to know what makes things work. For example, in 2nd grade I wanted to be a particle physicist. But just before I turned 13, I had my first seizure, and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Since then, I wanted to know what makes our brains tick. At 14 I was determined to be an epileptologist.I since discovered an odd talent for psychology, and wondered how I might incorporate this into my future plans. Then Lt. Col. Kirk Rowe gave a presentation about neuropsychology my first semester at WMU. Immediately afterwards I went back to my dorm, called my mom, and told her I had finally found my ideal career. I was going to be a neuropsychologist."Your mental illness is not your fault ; but it is your responsibility'" Marcus Parks, Last Podcast on the Left.I've taken this quote to heart in both a personal and professional manner. I do not feel shame or guilt for the disorders I cannot change, but rather a sense of resolve to overcome them, and prevent their unwelcome influences from impacting me and my loved ones. I also see this quote as telling me that it's my moral and professional responsibility to not find fault in others who cannot manage their symptoms as well as others, but instead to help them achieve the positive quality of life we all as humans deserve.Personally, I love to sing, and I've been in choirs for over a decade. I enjoy listening to true crime podcasts, and watching YouTube videos in my spare time. And because I genuinely am that much of a nerd, I think about psychology and how it's affected us as people, and how it affects modern America, from its international relations to the average citizen.
