As an appointed member of the Anti-Racism Directorate, operating under the Provincial Government of Ontario, I represented the City of Ottawa from August 2017 to July 2018. This period marked a pivotal time in acknowledging the United Nations' declaration of 2015-2024 as the Decade for the Advancement of People of African Descent, with a focus on themes of recognition, justice, and development.My role was primarily centered on contributing to the Anti-Black Racism sub-committee, which was integral to the Minister’s Anti-Racism Consultation Group on Ontario’s Anti-Racism Strategic Plan. This involvement provided a unique opportunity to delve deep into the complex history of Black Canadians, tracing their roots back to pre-Confederation times and understanding the legacy of anti-Black racism and the journey toward emancipation in Ontario.Key responsibilities in this position included:a) Offering insightful feedback from the community on the design and implementation of anti-racism initiatives within the Strategic Plan.b) Providing valuable perspectives to the Minister’s Anti-Racism Consultation Group, specifically relating to anti-Black racism.c) Actively contributing to public awareness and education initiatives aimed at addressing systemic racism.Through this role, I not only contributed to the provincial anti-racism efforts but also proudly represented the concerns and perspectives of the Black community of the City of Ottawa, playing a vital role in shaping anti-racism policies and initiatives at a provincial level.
