My job duties primarily involve preparing draft decisions regarding disability benefits applications based on the decisions of our Administrative Law Judges. This includes analyzing the record, evaluating the relevant facts, determining issues of law, composing cogent and legally defensible work product, and providing ALJ advisement on complex factual or legal issues. At times, I also perform in-depth pre-hearing case reviews, including analyzing and summarizing the available medical and nonmedical evidence and identifying any issues of fact or law to be addressed prior to the hearing.I have consistently received performance appraisals at the Successful Contribution level in all areas, and have received an Exemplary Contribution of Service Award in recognition of my writing quality.

In my practice, I primarily served as a Guardian ad litem for minors in domestic and status offender cases, including performing comprehensive investigations into various allegations, requesting and reviewing pertinent records, and providing written reports and sworn testimony as to my findings and best-interest recommendations.I also worked on a contract basis with a fellow solo practitioner on employment law matters, including assisting with research and writing, drafting various legal documents for trial, serving as second chair during hearings and trials, and representing individuals before the state unemployment board.

In addition to the traditional duties of a judicial law clerk (e.g., conducting legal research, drafting various legal documents, assisting with docket management), I also independently managed Administrative Appeals throughout the decision process. This included contacting attorneys, creating scheduling agreements, reviewing lower level decisions, and drafting recommended opinions.

Throughout my fellowship, I was given the opportunity to provide legal services to many underserved members of the community on a wide range of legal matters, including family law, probate and estate, and landlord-tenant cases. I so collaborated with senior staff to update materials regarding landlord-tenant law and renters’ rights, including handouts and online information packets.
