I worked as a lab technician on the Eocene Hyperthermals project in the Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center. I had always imagined myself working as a scientist making real contributions to the world through detailed research and testing. At the US Geological Survey I sampled cores and process sediment samples for microscopic analysis. The detailed processing steps include washing sediment samples to clean and concentrate foraminifera, splitting and vialing clean samples, and transferring microfossils to micropaleontologic slides. In addition to processing samples, I performed microscope and computer work to include identifying Paleocene and Eocene species, picking key species for stable isotopic and/or elemental ratio analysis, and entering and manipulating assemblage data into the USGS database.
