It is my hope to increase access to dental hygiene services and transition dental hygienists out of traditional dental hygiene settings and into public health communities. As dental professionals, recognizing the need to go to the patient in place of waiting for the patient to come to us will hopefully help increase oral health awareness. In addition, transitioning dental hygienists into alternative settings will help bridge the gap between the medical and dental health care professions while creating a viable financial benefit for all parties.

In my role as a dental hygienist I am responsible for patient assessment and treatment recommendation for comprehensive dental hygiene treatment planning. I provide a full scope of dental hygiene services which include: preventive and periodontal therapy, product recommendation and review, and adjunctive therapies (whitening, etc.) With the support of my dentist, I also provide pain management via local anesthesia. Using a true team approach, I am able to run an accelerated hygiene schedule. In addition to clinical responsibilities, I am also the Dental Hygiene Trainer and created the initial draft of the Dental Hygiene Training Manual that is now used company-wide. In 2015 I received an office certification that allows me to provide additional support to my team as Treatment Coordinator. In this role, I review the comprehensive dental plan as well as insurance benefits and payment options in an effort to help with treatment acceptance.

Hygiene Coach's were an early version of a formal mentor. In this position, working with 14 individual teams, the goal was clinical competency, comprehensive treatment planning, and patient compliance. Collaborating with the dental hygienist, dentist, and office manager was the key to building productive hygiene schedules and increasing patient satisfaction in the office. During this time, I was also responsible for an area-wide hygiene meeting. The meeting focused on three areas: non-verbal communication skills, team building within individual offices, and the dental hygiene metrics review.
