High performance computing (HPC) is a practical method for reading, parsing, and manipulating large quantities of data in a relatively short amount of time, but it is not commonly overviewed in early computer science or engineering education. The goal of this internship funded by the Department of Defense was to broaden the knowledge of and interest in HPC in early professionals by introducing its concepts to early undergraduate students.During this internship, I collaborated with two other undergraduates to handle simulated, stratified turbulent wake data. The file we worked with, while large, was only a fraction of the full simulation size. Our research goal was to develop methods for accurately observing this data in a time efficient manner and implement our methods on the full-sized data set. My responsibilities included identifying the wake and calculating, then graphing, its energy spectra at various points. The methods to calculate the spectra did not require HPC in the end, though, likely because we did not push the data quantity limit.I am grateful to have participated in this internship. It affirmed my programming skills and ability to pick up on new languages quickly, my punctuality and organization in my work, and my perseverance in solving a challenging problem. I also learned new skills using the Linux terminal, Octave, and LaTeX to bring to my classes in the following school years. Lastly, this experience laid the foundation for my interest in working with data analysis and data representation.
